For Immediate Release

Lusaka, April 15, 2024: The Zambia Free Press Initiative (FPI) is extremely concerned about police’s harassment and detention of two journalists who went to verify reports of a cancelled opposition rally at Matanda Ground in Kafue.

Police, without regard and respect for press freedom, bundled KBN TV’s Innocent Phiri on an armored police vehicle and later beat up Millennium TV producer Rodgers Mwimba before bundling him into the same police vehicle. They were detained for over two hours on what police said was conduct likely to cause the breach of police, forced them to delete their footage, before being released unconditionally.

This incident represents a concerning infringement of press freedom and the right to gather and report news freely. As an organization committed to defending excellence in journalism and promoting press freedom, we emphasize the critical role of the media in upholding democracy and transparency within our society.

The detention of Mwimba and Phiri undermines the principles of a free and independent press. Journalists must be allowed to carry out their duties without fear of intimidation or censorship. The incident at Matanda Ground sets a dangerous precedent and threatens the ability of journalists to operate freely in Zambia.

We urge the Zambia Police to respect the rights of journalists to operate freely and independently. Law enforcement agencies should facilitate, rather than obstruct, the work of the media in serving the public interest.

Furthermore, we call upon the authorities to engage in constructive dialogue with media organizations and civil society to address concerns and find solutions that uphold press freedom while maintaining public order and security. It is essential that all stakeholders work together to create an environment where journalists can work without fear of harassment.

Free Press Initiative reaffirms its commitment to defending press freedom and advocating for the rights of journalists in Zambia. We stand in solidarity with all media professionals and urge the authorities to respect and protect the vital role of the press in our democracy.
